Jobless Man Launches his Internet Business to Success in a Coffee Shop

Ken Hawkins was a graphic designer who was out of work. He decided to live the "New American Dream" (as CNN put it) and create a Web based business. Out of work and with little money he goes to the local coffee shop daily to utilize the free Wifi and goes to work.

What Would Google Do?

In a new book by Blogger Jeff Jarvis he takes a serious look at how powerful the relationship is the Google has with the world. He also spotlights a few other wonders of the web like Facebook, Craigslist and Wikipedia.

Jeff is very candid and to the point that content with out links has no value in todays world. Once upon a time we sold newspapers, now we blog and live in a digital world where the link determines how deep the reader wants to go.

Also, by opening up communication by "living in public" as he put it, companies are growing exponentially by getting great ideas from the customers who might seem like a complainer- when in truth these are the best customers because they are passionate and care about that product or service!

Will FaceBook Clip Twitters Wings?

FaceBook has been impressed with and Coveted Twitter since it became an Internet Sensation. Recently Facebook tried to aquire Twiitter with $500 Million in FaceBook stock. The Bird wasn't for sale!

FaceBook who noticed that all of us are posting our Tweets in the Facebook status box decided that since they have the technology why not make some changes?

When the new FaceBook look and updates go into Full Release you might not be tweeting as much as you used to because right there in FaceBook will be The Stream.

The Stream will ask "what are you thinking" and will bring the world of microblogging right into FaceBooks new integration!

Everyone now is waiting for the official launch to find out if we all keep tweeting our heads off, or if FaceBook will clip Twitters wings?

UPDATE: 3/18/09

When Facebook launched the Stream on Monday it did not get rave reviews in fact a borage of angy comments Flittered on Twitter!

Thousands of people called it "wanna be!" one person even referred to it as the "ugly step sister to friend feed!". There were glitches galore and when it came to being REAL TIME there was a time delay??? How is that Real Time? Postings weren't hitting for 15 minutes if at all. Day one, not good for Facebooks Stream.

Then the big news hit, Tweetdeck added the Facebook Stream to its application and suddenly tho still not 100% the Facebook Stream seemed to be working better. We will watch and see what is actually going to happen.

Note: the most popular way to view the Facebook Stream is by watching Twitter. An option that you can Click on right from Facebook. That said I think Twitter is still in the lead.

Also just since Facebook launched "The Stream" a new report came out showing Twitter growing at 1382%

Maybe the winner is already clear, our little bluebird of happiness is turning into one BIG Eagle!

iReport Personal Budget Cuts

This is the actual footage of ME on CNN News with my first iReport. This hit the news only 5 hours after I became an iReporter and in the last 20 hours has had over 78,000 views and 115 comments. My phone rang like crazy today- people were calling me who didn't know I had joined iReport saying "OMG you are on CNN!" I got the same message in txt.

Using CNN NEWS and CNN iReport to get Massive Exposure In Less than 5 hours ON THE NEWS

To begin I'm a news junkie. I love to stay current and get good META from it. I've always been one who liked the news. As long as I wasn't watching with Dad,ooh scary! But thats a whole nother blog!

Since I've got this NEWS part of me that I sometimes let come out in my videos I decided to join CNN.com/iReport and start letting the NEWSIEST part of me come out there with other people who share my ideas or NOT. Hey, a healthy debate is always good and makes for some interesting comments.

Today I joined and became a CNN iReporter. 5 hours ago. By the second video I was ON CNN NEWS! In front of MILLIONS of people and my video is running all over CNN.com and its pages!

When I went into Camtasia the results my phone rang and it was Patty Lane of CNN RADIO and she wanted to know if she could Call me at 11 PM (is that too late? NOOO)and do an interview with me. UMM YES!!!

See like I said in the video "Following the NEWS can LEAD to Massive Exposure"

TA DA!

So in 5 hours of my FIRST DAY I got massive views, over 1200, and a radio interview that will post to 2000 syndicated CNN radio spot on FRIDAY, Feb. 29,2009

Now don't get me wrong. Not everyone can do this. You have to love the news and current events but if thats you, then there is the exposure payoff!

Continuing Educations for American Adults

"The U.S. has the highest high school drop out rate in the world! When you quit high school you not only are quitting on yourself you are quitting on AMERCIA!" President Obama in his first State of the Nation address on education.

This is where the more learning that you can get DOES come into value on your resume. You can learn skills, even here online that will help you in your efforts to maintain a career, create a new one or just start your own business.

The President also called out to adults...

In his speech Tuesday, Obama vowed that education is among the top priorities of his administration and urged Americans to take advantage of the promise of an education. Watch Obama discuss education »

"In a global economy, where the most valuable skill you can sell is your knowledge, a good education is no longer just a pathway to opportunity. It is a prerequisite," he said.

"It is our responsibility as lawmakers and as educators to make this system work, but it is the responsibility of every citizen to participate in it." he said.

"So tonight, I ask every American to commit to at least one year or more of higher education or career training. This can be a community college or a four-year school, vocational training or an apprenticeship. But whatever the training may be, every American will need to get more than a high school diploma."

Besides the education here online that I am working on in various technical skills, I have also been researching 12-24 month programs at the local University. I am interested in Communications and a New Course just for Entreprenuers that comes with an 18 month MBA! I have some other courses that I am interested in as well and will have to choose the one that I FEEL the most passionate and capable of. We will see :)

You have heard myself and other mentors say time and time again, Investing in yourself and your knowledge is key.

Building a New Presence Online

Thanks to all who messaged me while I was in the middle of the move. Always great to hear from you all. UPDATE- now that I am in the new HOME OFFICE I am going to be adding some great things to pages. As I go through this expansion I will also be posting videos of cool new features and tools that I have found as well as MORE RESOURCES.

There is a big event coming up Locally and I am going to be taking the camera out to get some footage! Huge Business Expo going on that will be exciting and since I know the organizers, Zany and FUN will be on the menu. They network with PIZZAZZ! People have a lot of fun meeting through games and such. That is such a good idea because people Remember each other much better and always have a great story to tell.

Unemployment snowballs at Half a Million a Month (thats 15 Million out of work by August)

As unemployment snowballs to the tune of 500,000 job losses per month by August the U.S will have 15 Million unemployed. Where are all of these people going to look for jobs. They are rushing to the Internet. People are keeping their Internet connection over their land phones, cable and etc because the Web provides a way to stay connected in so many ways.

Out of all these people rushing to the web about 25% of them have never been online so they are completely new and that means that Social Media experts like myself need to be ready to lead and teach. I know many others in this industry and are you ready? You should be.

A home based business for the underemployed (those working under 40 hours a week) moonlighting to create extra money to pay bills and those who are starting home based businesses to make ends meet. Whatever they are looking for be ready- the door is open and all that you have to do is walk through.

While he was on the campaigne trail his myspace and facebook pages helped him mobilize and win the election.

He will use the email list of 13 million people to mobilize new ways to get our economy, jobs and community services back on track. If that doesn't prove that YOU can use the Internet and Social Media to your advantage then I don't know what does!

Right now I am in production on my local show. Thats another channel and blog to post up later for you to see after I get it rolling. I am still posting videos to the myhappylaptop channel but they are scheduled in intrevals so that I can keep up with my schedule. I am also spending a ton of time communicating with people in Facebook since myspace has proved to be slow compared to FB. (Thats my experience) I have more communications with people there and can network locally much faster and efficently. Check the channel for all the latest and I will see you there :)
